Cultural Humility for Organizations
With Meridith Oram
Friday, June 19, 2020 (9:00am-2:00pm)
Many organizations over the years have focused on ensuring that their staff and boards are culturally competent. However competency implies finite learning - a certain level of sufficiency in knowledge and skills that allows one to be deemed 'culturally competent'. Given the many different identities, communities, cultures, ethnicities, faiths, races, and experiences that people have, it is impossible for someone to actually be 'culturally competent' to all people and communities.
An alternative approach is cultural humility, a lifelong learning practice that honors other people's and communities' expertise in their own experiences.
