Supporting The Native Cultures Fund

The Native Cultures Fund gratefully accepts donations of all sizes to be used to support Native cultural and community health in California. The funds go directly to Native-led grants and programs.

Fiscal Transparency

In 2014 the Native Cultures Fund received a $1 million endowment from Eunice C. Nielsen in the form of the Jack Montoya Fund for the Preservation of Native American Culture. Ms. Nielsen also bequeathed $4 million to the Jack Montoya Memorial Scholarship Fund for Native students in California who are strengthening their cultures.

Both Jack Montoya endowments are meant to last in perpetuity, so Humboldt Area Foundation invests them and NCF makes grants and scholarships from the interest, currently at 4.5% annually. Humboldt Area Foundation also takes a 1.75% fee from the interest of all funds to cover labor and expenses associated with the management of all funds, grants and scholarships.  All programs are supported by donations to the Opportunity Fund as well as partnerships with outside foundations including the Hewlett Foundation, The California Endowment, The James Irvine Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
