ongoing programs

The vast majority of HAF grants are to local nonprofits. We also support them to be the best organizations they can be.

The Northern California Association of Nonprofits (NorCAN) provides professional development opportunities for organizations stretched thin with limited staff and capacity. HAF and the McLean Foundation created NorCAN in 2004 to offer low-cost workshops, roundtables, networking events, and more for nonprofit professionals to learn from trainers and from each other. A steering committee helps prioritize NorCAN offerings.

The Rooney Resource Center

The Rooney Resource Center has been providing information, resources, and support to local nonprofits and community members researching nonprofit issues since 1994. Here you will find support with problem-solving, a lending library, customized referrals to consultants, partners and coaches, as well as tools and templates for navigating nonprofit management challenges.

Native Cultures Fund

The Native Cultures Fund is a program created and led by Indigenous people to support the rebuilding of traditional cultures that have positive impacts on individual and community health and wellbeing. NCF has served Tribal culture-bearers in 50 California counties since 2002 at HAF. This year, NCF is in a redesign process as it coalesces with a large bequest to HAF, the Montoya Fund, with similar goals as well as support for native scholarships.

Cascadia Center for Leadership

Nearly 500 North Coast residents have attended the Cascadia Center for Leadership to build skills that will make them more effective nonprofit, government and business leaders since 2000. Led once every year by dynamic faculty partners Mary Gelinas and Roger James, two dozen community leaders hone their skills in fostering engaged and effective teamwork while creating a more connected network of community leaders.
