The services of the Humboldt Area Foundation are built to respond to and support community
interest and action. Often the services are used by community members
organizing to address issues of importance to them involving either no
non profit organization or multiple organizations.
HAF’s primary commitment is to those working to improve their community, regardless of how they are organized. HAF believes that the region, and indeed America, is best served by the constructive engagement of residents from all walks of life and the sharing of their wisdom, knowledge and energy.
Our services: meeting facilities, training programs, consultation, library materials, convening meetings, fund creation, supporting the organizing of community efforts and others are available to all in the region. The rule we follow is that the work is to build the community, address community concerns that involve multiple stake holders, explore and incubate community ideas and solutions and that the use of services is not for personal gain. Due to IRS regulations it is difficult for HAF to give a grant outside of the non profit structure.
Examples of community led programs incubated by HAF include NorCan (Northern California Association of Non Profits), the Cascadia Leadership Center, Redwood Coast Rural Action, the Redwood Broadband Initiative, Wild Rivers Community Foundation (Del Norte County and Curry County, Oregon), the Trinity Trust and others. HAF hosts hundreds of meetings to explore the ideas and questions on the mind of community members.
